Geldof is cool by me, he may be a cunt and has terrible taste in music (U2).
But atleast hes done/doing something worthwhile.

Come off it, him and Midge Ure didn?t have to organise Band Aid/Live Aid in the first place, instead of helping dying Ethiopian kids, they could have sat on their asses and done fuck all like a lot of celebrities/musicians... for that he gets my respect.
If Geldoff is so into making money to give to African nations and whatnot why not just sell the tickets to the highest bidders himself, instead of having a lottery on it. Surely he could have made more money for them that way, Africa would get some cash, the rich people could go watch pompous pricks like Coldplay and the radio people could blart about how much money live-8 made. Everyone wins.
Whats with the name anyway?
but the question is, did it really help the problem? from my understanding, children are dying from starvation at a greater rate today then pre-live-aid. yeah it was grand, yeah he was a global star, yeah there was a lot of money generated from live aid, yeah it furthered the careers of a lot of people but it didn't seem to do a lick towards saving the children. i can take a collection for the homeless, keep 99 percent for 'costs involved in the collection' and send 1 percent to the homeless shelter, that doesn't necessarily make me a good human, and it certainly doesn't make my collection a helpful event. there are so many different ways to help/support causes that do not involve primping your ego and pomping yourself across a stage. i have more respect for the person who goes down and volunteers their time at a soup kitchen knowing that they will receive no glory for their sacrifice then i do for a star who yells "look at me. now support my cause" and then has the audacity to complain and moan about it. according to mr geldof, this live 8 event is not about raising money but about raising awareness (?) so why should he care where and how the people are getting tickets for it right? It?s not about the money.
but in a way, i can see where you are coming from, at least he tried, albeit not very well i guess. but i still am not too sure what you want me to come off of.
Like Tony Blair and Bob Geldof are gonna convince the other G8 leaders to write off African debts, yeah right.
You think Chirac or Schroeder will consider any suggestions Blair puts forward? Chirac will be in Malaysia for the Olympic vote on the day the G8 summit opens.
btw, for those that don't know, Live 8 is so called because it's timed to coincide with the G8 summit, the meeting of leaders from the world's eight wealthiest nations, and lean on them to cancel African debt. Bob thinks this will help save lives, but in effect it will just mean the governments keep more of the cash for themselves.
Like Bill said, I don't think a great deal of the money from the 1st gig 20 years ago got to the intended recipients. Wouldn't surprise me if the volunteers on the ground, ie Oxfam, probably had their gear highjacked a few times by guerillas as well.

Some African debts have been cancelled. Some
haven't because it would consequently benefit
corrupt governments. Band Aid's ?millons did
quite a lot, it simply wasn't enough, that's all.
